History
Stokesdale was originally called Green Pond, named after a swampy body of water in the area. In 1860, a general store made up the entirety of the town, and a post office was added after the Revolutionary War. Locals eventually removed “green” from the name, and the area became known as “Pond.” The name was changed to Stokesdale after a railroad employee in 1886, when the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley Railroad came through the area. The town was officially incorporated in 1907.
During the Great Depression, the town went bankrupt and became inactive. The charter was later revoked in 1971, but it wasn’t until 1989 that the town was incorporated a second time. The Stokesdale community is proud of its history, which is evident in the town seal created in 1994. It has railroad tracks, the original name of Green Pond, intersecting highways, tobacco, a horse and plow, and a still, representing the water used to make moonshine to supplement farm income.
